If the same person always ends up scrubbing the bathroom while everyone else “forgets” their turn — and the whole rota collapses the moment someone goes away for a week — this free household chore rotation planner fair to the whole household builds a week-by-week rota that rotates every chore evenly and simply skips anyone who is unavailable.

How to use this fair household chore rotation planner in 3 steps
Step 1 — List your household and your chores. Type each member’s name on its own line, then do the same for the chores. You need at least two of each.
Step 2 — Set the cycle and mark away weeks. Pick the start Monday and the number of weeks. The default is the number of members, which shows one full cycle. Then add lines like “Sam: week 3” for anyone who will be away.
Step 3 — Generate, check and share. Press “Generate rota” to see the week-by-week table, the fairness counts and a note for every skipped week. Then copy it to the fridge door or print it.
Worked example: four people, three chores, one away week
Take a household of Sam, Priya, Lee and Ana. The chores are Kitchen, Bins and Bathrooms. The rota runs for 4 weeks from Monday 2 November 2026, and Sam is away in week 3 (“Sam: week 3”).
Pressing “Load example” fills in exactly this setup. Pressing “Generate rota” then produces this rota:
| Week starting | Kitchen | Bins | Bathrooms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 — Mon 2 Nov 2026 | Sam | Priya | Lee |
| Week 2 — Mon 9 Nov 2026 | Priya | Lee | Ana |
| Week 3 — Mon 16 Nov 2026 | Lee | Ana | Priya* |
| Week 4 — Mon 23 Nov 2026 | Ana | Sam | Priya |
*In week 3 Sam was away, so Bathrooms moved from Sam to Priya. The chore was reassigned, not lost.
The fairness counts for the full cycle look like this:
| Member | Kitchen | Bins | Bathrooms | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sam | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| Priya | 1 | 1 | 2 | 4 |
| Lee | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
| Ana | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
Lee and Ana each did every chore exactly once. That is the rotation working as it should.
Sam did fewer chores only because Sam was away in week 3, and Priya covered one extra that week. The notes spell out every skip.
Pair this rota with our laundry loads planner to split wash days fairly too. And if a routine slips, the missed-day repair planner checks whether your target is still reachable.
Common mistakes a fair rota fixes
One person gets the same chore every week. A rota written once never changes, so the same person is stuck with the worst job. This planner shifts every chore forward each week, so the hated jobs move around the household.
The rota breaks when someone is away. Most rotas have no plan for holidays or trips. Here you mark unavailable weeks, and the planner skips that person and reassigns their chores for those weeks only.
Nobody checks whether the split is actually fair. Arguments about who does more never end without numbers. The fairness table counts exactly who did what, so everyone can see the split at a glance. It is the simplest way to keep a household chore rotation planner fair over time.
FAQs: is this household chore rotation planner fair?
How does the rotation work?
Each week, every chore moves one step down the member list, so over a full cycle each person does each chore as evenly as possible. Change anything and press “Generate rota” to recalculate the whole cycle instantly.
How is fairness counted?
The fairness table counts how many times each member did each chore across the whole cycle, with a total per member. If the split looks uneven, add more weeks or adjust the unavailable weeks and generate again.
What happens when someone is unavailable?
Add a line like “Sam: week 3” and that member is skipped for those weeks. Their chores are reassigned to available members that week, and the notes list every skip and reassignment, so nothing is lost.
What if the number of members and chores differs?
It still works. Every chore is assigned each week, so with more members than chores some people rest each week, and with more chores than members some people take two. The fairness table keeps the load even across the cycle.
Does the tool save the rota or need an account?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, stored or tracked. Use “Copy result” or “Print” to keep your rota.
